French society went through an evolution, during the last decades, from an openness to cultural diversity to an ambivalent position, due to a fear for social fragmentation. The new debate on laicity which emerged oscillates between two extreme positions: a return to private-discrete religious identities, or a public recognition of identities in a multiculturalist perpective
