Game, weapons... and questions. Upper Magdalenian hunting practices at Isturitz (Paleolithic)
It is obvious that hunting activities were of crucial importance during the Palaeolithic. But it is very difficult for prehistorians to reconstruct the social behaviors surrounding the hunt, because they can only rely on the game's bones and the weapons' remains. Indeed, the data from the Isturitz upper Magdalenian dwelling shows that questions such as the type of huntings methods, the existence of a specialized hunting, or the technical investment in the weaponry can seldom be addressed properly from this point of view. Our only alternative might be to change our viewpoint : not just study the bones, but try to replace the animal inside the group's conceptual system.
