Résumé

This volume is dedicated to new theoretical and empirical insights into the behavior of
transitive (valency)-affecting mechanisms such as passives, causatives, antipassives,
resultative and middles. All contributions are functionally oriented, seeking explanations
for the phenomena studied in the interaction between form and function. The complex
cross-linguistic relations of the mechanisms in the domain of transitivity and voice still
require more studies on distinct languages as well as new theoretical reflexions looking
forward new explanations. The three first papers in the volume all address general issues
involving passives, and the remainder describes mechanisms of voice and transitivity in
particular languages or groups of related languages, several of them from the Uto-Aztecan
family: Pima Bajo, Tarahumara, Yaqui, Warihio, one of an isolated language Purepecha,
two deal with languages from Argentina, Toba and Mapudungun or Mapuche; antipassives
in Spanish is also considered. In the following we provide brief summaries of the
individual contributions.
