Ramadan during a Civil War (as reflected in a series of sermons)

Abstract

In March 1992, the month of Ramadan coincided in Bosnia-Herzegovina with a transition from a shaky peace into a bloody war. Against the background of extreme interethnic tensions, the perception of Islam as a refuge for the Muslim community encouraged varying re-Islamization activities. The sermons then given in different mosques of Sarajevo help us to better understand the internal pluralism of Bosnian Islam. They also show that some imams used Islam as an impetus to appeasement, and others as an impetus to mobilization.
