Abstract
The velic height corresponding to a vowel depends on the identity of the vowel, and of the neighboring context, and on the position of the phoneme in the word and in relation to the stress. In order to study the velic height of the nasal vowels placed in nonwords in Brazilian Portuguese, we measured (with the help of fiberscopic data) the velar movements, for one speaker. Our results confirm that the identity of the vowel influences the height of the velum.
