Animals in Sociology. Towards French Sociological Animal Studies

Résumé

This paper will present the first results of an exploration of the emerging French-speaking "Sociological Animal Studies". This exploration is grounded in several observations: (1) The interdisciplinary field of animal studies is developing internationally; (2) work done in this field aims towards the production of a sociological reflection on relationships between animals and human societies; (3) sociological work on this subject is developing in English-speaking areas and contributing to the growth of animal studies; (4) sociological approaches of these relationships are also developing in French-speaking countries, but more discreetly; (5) very few French-speaking researchers and/or references have achieved visibility within the animal studies. The connections between the English- and French-speaking areas concerning animal studies have not yet been established. We will present the specificities of the French-speaking context regarding "Sociological Animal Studies" in order to give a few milestones to understand this parallel development.
