A cultivated audience: Comparable corpora and cross language collocation
Résumé
Comparable corpora can give an insight into the meanings that have become attached to words that on the surface may seem to have simply translationequivalents, but which in reality overflow with meanings displaying the cultural values of the source and source language. This texts uses the IntUne set of corpora drawn from the British, French and Italian press to show how the words 'culture' and 'cultivate' have not only changed over time, but display very different meaning potentials when found in the press of the three countries. In analysing the corpora, the study draws on the notions of colocational networks and collocational resonance.
