La niche artistique des Afro-brésiliens à Paris : un opérateur de reconnaissance sociale

Abstract : The condition of the black population in France is diverse. In Paris, Afro-Brazilians share a unique position within the broader black population. This article deals with the life experiences of black and brown Brazilians, socio-racial relations and the strategies of integration and socialization of this particular population in the French context. This contribution draws from our fieldwork and attempts to understand the relational processes through which transnational and ethno-racial identity boundaries are constructed. The ethno-artistic work market in Paris is the focal point by which the experiences of this group of immigrants is negotiated and articulated within French society. The dynamics of inclusion/exclusion raised by Afro-Brazilian artists has now become a part of the hierarchic competition of national identification whereby Brazilian culture has become the instrumental ground for prestige and legitimacy.
