Ecosystem services provided by urban vegetation: A literature review
Résumé
Since the environmental crisis of the 1970s and the emergence of sustainable development, we have witnessed the increasing development of urban vegetation and green spaces. New disciplines and approaches, following the example of ecology and urban forestry, are developing, in particular to assess the ecosystem services provided by vegetation in urban areas. The objective of this study is to enumerate and characterize the largest number of these services studied over the past decade. We have accordingly selected 170 articles according to pre-established criteria and created a table of the data from this selection. This table then underwent multiple component analysis and ascending hierarchical classification to identify the predominant characteristics of these studies. No fewer than 56 ecosystem services were identified; some were the principal focus of the research work, while others were simply mentioned. The latter might therefore be interesting research topics. Our results also indicate that the topic studied most often is the effect of vegetation on air quality. The analysis of these services requires, because of their great variety, that the research community adopts a multidisciplinary vision. Moreover, because of the ever-increasing number of ecosystem services attributed to urban vegetation, its multifunctional nature appears to be a promising research avenue
