Defying Social Decorum in Roister Doister and The Merry Wives of Windsor
Résumé
This article proposes an intertextual relation, close enough to constitute an argument for influence, between the representation of Roister Doister, in Nicolas Udall's comedy of that name (c.1553), and Shakespeare's later depiction of Falstaff in The Merry Wives of Windsor. The essential element of the parallel is the disruption of social order and its restoration on the initiative of a community of women.
