Le port de Sihanoukville (Cambodge) et l'organisation des échanges dans le sud de la péninsule depuis la fin des années 1950

Résumé

In spite of its coastline, until the late 1950s Cambodia had only a modest inland river port. After Cambodia's independence, the kingdom was faced with the necessity of emancipating its port traffic from the river outlet which was located at that time in Vietnamese territory. A deepwater port was consequently built on the coast, in the area of Sihanoukville--a former "blind spot" of the country located between the coast and the rainforest--which was transformed into "an integrated and exploited periphery," positioned to interface with worldwide traffic. Port infrastructures were destroyed at the beginning of the conflict in the 1970s, then rebuilt with funds from the international community since 1992. While the port of Phnom Penh benefits from its proximity to the textile companies and the vicinity of agricultural production areas to increase its freight traffic, the port of Sihanoukville welcomes a highly increasing container and oil traffic. Managed by two independent--even competing--authorities, theses two ports are nonetheless becoming complementary.
