Claude Lévi-Strauss and Louis Dumont. Media Portraits

Dominique Casajus

Résumé

The main French daily and weekly newspapers regularly publish ethnology book reviews, interviews with well-known ethnologists and articles on the current situation of the human sciences. It is on materials of this kind that this article is based. Claude Levi-Strauss is by far the most often mentioned author, followed quite far behind by Louis Dumont. This is the reason why I chosed to concentrate on these two scholars. My paper is devoted in the main to articles by non-specialists, whose work comprises the bulk of the available literature. It goes without saying that, in general, I do not hold with the - sometimes very odd - statements that I will need to reproduce here.
