Missarum Sollemnia: Eucharistic Rituals in the Middle Ages

Résumé

This chapter focuses on the rite of the Eucharist, in order to uncover aspects of how liturgical rituals ‘worked’ in the middle ages. It begins with the historiographical background to the mass and the liturgy, and then discusses the developing theology of the Eucharist from the early church to the high middle ages. The chapter then focuses on liturgical ritual, the ‘performed’ character of the ritual which ‘makes present’ the numinous within the world. The chapter demonstrates how important ‘sensory’ elements were in the process of the rite, and that this element is profoundly implicated in the theology of the liturgy. The chapter makes particular use of liturgical manuscripts, and one of its key arguments is that liturgical books participated as material objects in the process.
