Gender Inequalities in Contemporary Metropolis : an European perspective

Résumé

The metropolis is defined as an urban space which, while allowing agents to take part in processes on a global scale, remains a local society. The gender dimension is no exception to this rule and spatiality integrates the gender-based inequality of social relations in a subjective process of norming, which produces and maintains existing inequality. With respect to methodology, we prefer to use combined approaches, primarily a biographical approach which enables us to grasp the (cultural, social and symbolic) representations and modes of action which form the societal body of processes creating and sustaining inequality. As a basis for this approach we use surveys, in the form of life narratives. The results presented concern gender analysis with regard to individual mobility patterns in spaces impacted by metropolitization, in so-called ‘marginal’ spaces and in metropolitan spaces: peri-urban spaces in France .
