« Le monachisme chrétien dans l’empire iranien (IVe-XIVe siècles) », dans R. Gyselen (éd.)
Résumé
The monastic movement is at the origin of the developpement of syriac christianity in the sasanian empire. Spiritual masters, like Abraham of Kashkar (considered as the «father of the monks»), had a strong and decisive influence on its expansion. East-Syrians, West-Syrians, Chalcedonians participated together, often in rivalry, to this missionary effort, on the same grounds, in relation with commercial ways. This chapter deals with the origins of monasticism in the iranian empire, the role of the benay and benat qeyama, the Mar Awgin tradition, the missionary activities, the monastic organisation, etc. Monks played a decisive part in the establishment and preservation of christological doctrine, and could be considered as the guardians of the faith in the VI-VIIth centuries Iran, even after the muslim conquest.
