Résumé

Rarely have spatial networks and maritime transport been analysed in relation with the socio-economic characteristics of their connected nodes. Taking the port region as the relevant unit of analysis, which is equivalent to the captive hinterland of one or several neighbouring ports, this chapter seeks interdependencies between economic specialisation, network centrality, and traffic specialisation across 518 ports situated in 124 subnational regions of 13 Pacific Rim countries. Main results conclude to strong linkages between service sector, population, and containers, primary sector and solid bulk, and secondary sector and centrality. The mapping of the largest maritime flows by type of commodity and port region helps to understand how unequally organised is the maritime backbone of the Pacific Rim.
