WHY AND HOW: TRANSLATING FROM THESE 'OTHER' LANGUAGES?
Résumé
Translations from the "Indan literature" in European languages are massively from texts written in English. Why are the so-called regional or vernacular languages so markedly underscored in the global market (as well as in the local market of India, although to a lesser extent)? The study is an attempt to answer the question with the analysis given by Geetanjal Shree, a contemporary Hindi novelist, as well as an attempt to show the relevance of translating from Indian languages other than English, with two case studies, from contemporary Hindi writers.
