From Strassburg to Shravana Belgola. Ernst Leumann and Brahmasūri Śāstrī
Résumé
This is a part of a larger exploration of the relationship between Europe and India as regards the search for manuscripts of Jain works in the 19th century. This article focuses on the dual relationship between Ernst Leumann (1859-1931), then Professor in Strassburg University, who could never visit India and needed the help of Indian local scholars to get manuscripts, and Brahmasūri Śāstrī (1839-1897) who was an erudite placed in Sravanabelgola (Karnatak). This paper throws light on the life, activities and personality of Brahmasūri Śāstrī through the Sanskrit biography written by his son Dorbali Śāstrī which has been preserved among Leumann's left papers in the University of Hamburg.
