Liens sociaux numériques. Pour une sociologie plus soucieuse des techniques
Résumé
The introductory article to this issue, devoted to the sociological
study of digital social ties, analyzes several
issues related to sociology’s taking into account of technology.
First, in the continuous perspective, the article
addresses the inability to distinguish between the dimension
not related to information and communication
technologies (ICT) and the ICT dimension as a social
fact. To do this, it begins by examining sociology’s initial
difficulties in facing technologies. This indifference led
it to adopt a selective perspective on their roles in social
dynamics. The text then thematizes the specific way
in which ICTs have been studied by sociology through
three main paths. The approach of social relations mediated
by technology has long seen the work on ICTs as
being confined in specialized spaces. At the same time,
“general” sociology has remained largely aloof. This is
the third point explored by this introduction, based on
an analysis of the space of Francophone sociological
publications. These analyses lead to several general remarks
on the possibility of a sociology open to the consideration
of ICTs, and especially of the Internet. Finally,
the text presents the five original articles of this issue
and discusses their main contributions to a sociological
reflection of social ties and digital social ties.
