Crossing the English Channel

Résumé
Abstract : From Roman times onwards, many plans and attempts to invade Britain have been conceived and prepared by continental powers, above all by France. Most of them failed, what supports the idea of a " natural " maritime vocation of the British, making them appear invincible. Restricting the analysis to the last three centuries, however, one cannot deny the importance of the geopolitics of each period, that makes the British command of the sea appear as less certain than often acknowledged. On the contrary, Britain's great rivals were often prevented from defying the Royal Navy by continental coalitions, that, even if not exclusively provoked by the British, were actively supported by several English governments. Conscious of Britain's sea power, her continental rivals invented strategies, not entirely comprehended by the term " bluff ". At any rate, the French military projects led to the creation of coastal infrastructures and equipment, influencing, among other factors, the settlement geography.
