Introverted or extroverted? Profiles of regional technological interconnectedness in Europe

Résumé

The diversity of European regions in terms of their capacity for innovation has already given rise to an extensive body of literature. However, only a few contributions focus on scientific and technological interconnections as a set of resources which guides local innovation activities and causes regions to change their cognitive specialization over time. Using co-publication data, Benaim et al. (2014) make a distinction between two main regional tendencies: “introversion” (withdrawal) and “extroversion” (openness). In turn, we employ Economic Dominance Theory (EDT) both in building flow matrices of interregional knowledge based on patent citations data, and in analyzing the evolution of the cognitive profiles of the regions of the world which had participated in the European technology market (EPO) over the period of 2001-2011.
