Circumambulating the Jowo in Mongolia

Résumé

This article focuses on the architectural peculiarities of the Three Temples (T urban juu) and more particularly the Central Jowo/Temple (T ool juu) of Erdeni juu, built by Abadai Khan in 1586 and its main icon. I discuss historian of architecture Bao Muping’s recent article on the architectural models of Erdeni juu, and propose new hypotheses about the location inside the wall, the inner corridor of circumambulation, the main icons and the alignment of the Three Temples. I argue that “Erdeni juu” here does not mean “Precious Temple” but should be translated as “Jowo Rinpoche” by reference to the twelve-year old Jowo Śākyamuni (Rinpoche), the most worshiped statue of Lhasa, housed in the Jokhang (Tib. Jo kang) Temple of Lhasa, and housed a statue of twelve-year old Śākyamuni.
