"Caverne" or "grotte", a Necker Geographical cube
The specialist is often asked what is the difference between the French words “caverne” and “grotte”. When he
answers that there is none, that these words are synonyms, there is always disappointment. Many people firmly believe that
in science, every single word has to be precise to the extent that it refers to a single thing. The history of the words “caverne”
and “grotte” explains 1) why, in geography, those words can designate the same object, and 2) that “physical geography”
and “human geography” complete each other. We also blow the whistle on the use, in education of words that favour the
logic of the discourse at the expense of it’s the content.
