Dark and light colour in Early Near Eastern pottery

Résumé

Such terms as "Dark-Faced Burnished Ware" (Braidwood and Braidwood 1960, 49), "Grey-Black Ware"(Akkermans 1989, 82), "Black Series" (Faura and Le Mière 1999, 283) and "Early Dark Ware" (Nishiaki and Le Mière 2005, 61), have become widely accepted to define different groups of Near Eastern Neolithic pottery. These terms reflect the scholarly importance given to the darker colours. Light colours are far less often present in the terms used. The intention of this paper is to discuss the significance of the light and the dark colours and stress the importance of this distinction, particularly in terms of decoration.
