L'introduction des céramiques fines hellénistiques du bassin oriental de la Méditerranée à Alexandrie. Importations et imitations locales.

Résumé

The distinctive features of Egyptian pottery render it easily identifiable and differentiate it from fine pottery imported from the eastern Mediterranean (and from western Mediterranean pottery). The pottery for which the origin is not known or not clearly determined is classified into ceramic groups defined according to technological criteria. These groups are then compared with cohérent groups defined in the bibliographies according to descriptive data, in particular their morphological types and development. Chemical analysis of samples from certain determined groups are compared to references (previous analyses of groups with determined origin carried out by the Laboratoire de Céramologie at the Maison de l'Orient and by the laboratory of the University of Berlin) in order to attribute origin to them. This article presents the graphic results of chemical analyses of samples of fine ceramics imported to Alexandria and their correlation with certain references: these results indicate a Rhodian origin for one of the groups, a origin of Cnidos for some of the samples, the relation of one homogenous group consisting of bowls with relief and of eastern terra sigillata Β to references concerning the region of Ephesus, and the appartenance of Cypriot sigillata to the group of Cypriot wares containing little limestone.
