Saint George the Anatolian, master of frontiers.
"Saint Georges l'Anatolien, maître des frontières",
Résumé
The annual pilgrimage to St George’s monastery on Buyukada (Princes islands) in Istanbul seems to belong to a tradition going back to the long cohabitation of multi-religious groups in Ottoman and post-Ottoman space. This chapter is based on the ethnography of devotional practices observed in the 1990s and 2000s put into perspective by the study of ethnographic archives from early 20th century Black Sea Greek Orthodox communities. These local practices took place in the margins of institutional religious activities and were associated with specific sacred spaces related to a holy figure. Are mixed phenomena part of the everyday life of pre-national societies? It becomes clear that such practices vary across time and space and also that the habitus of this kind of mixed pilgrim does not exist. Rather, this is about an ad hoc mixing of objects and symbols, a bricolage operation drawing elements from the pilgrim’s singular religious and cultural sources.
