The historical background of the French nonprofit sector is rather specific in comparison with other continental European countries and explains its relatively recent development. This chapter presents the contribution of this sector to the French economy and details its composition by field and the sources of its revenue. The French Third sector is then compared internationally. It concludes with its main issues
