Résumé

The great modern school project was founded in most countries between the late nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century, when the national public education systems were built with the mission of schooling all children. In those years of strong confidence in education, two major projects were affirmed: a social justice project and an emancipation project. One is based on the belief in the ability of the school to promote a fair social hierarchy based on the merit of individuals and not only on the privileges due to their birth; the second one postulates that the school can form autonomous and solidary citizens within the framework of democratic national societies. This article analyzes these two projects, that of justice and that of education, to distinguish their different dimensions and try to define the challenges that we face today. It is argued, in general terms, that in so far as education systems are embedded in societies, the more just and equal a society is, the more likely the school is to be fair and egalitarian. Because although the school intervenes on society, it is perhaps not able to “save the world”.
