Poste in translation.
We know everything about the dragomans: their hairy cloaks, their hasty loyalty, the impossible challenge for the European states to train them as they saw fit, the dynasties that crossed centuries and continents. During the 19th century, however, there was a tendency to nationalize this key personnel of the consular institution. But what was the position of the dragoman in unified italy? this question is examined in the present study. While the new italian state was also trying to form a national body of interpreters, particularly through the Oriental language schools, recruit- ment remained essentially local and family-based. in the same way, pro- fessionalization also remained limited: the interpreters were polyvalent figures who practiced other activities, and they regularly took the place of consuls.
