Tradition without exclusion. Richard Simon, Bossuet and Socinianism in the face of authenticity criteria

In the XVIIth century, Richard Simon blamed the Roman Catholic Church for not following, according to the Tradition, the rule of Vincent of Lérins prohibiting all doctrinal innovation. By adopting Augustin’s own opinions, the Church has deviated from the constant Tradition of the Elders. But who to follow when two opposing parties of equal importance each find arguments in the Scriptures and the Tradition? This article shows that as opposed to the tenet of Bossuet, Richard Simon is not, on Trinitarian questions, an ally of the Socinians, but he tends rather to promote an indiscriminate Tradition, without exclusion.
Au XVIIe siècle, Richard Simon reproche à l’Église catholique romaine de ne pas avoir suivi, en ce qui concerne la Tradition, la règle de Vincent de Lérins qui interdit toute innovation doctrinale. En adoptant des opinions particulières à Augustin, l’Église aurait dévié de la Tradition constante des anciens Pères. Mais qui suivre lorsque deux partis opposés d’égale importance trouvent chacun des arguments dans l’Écriture et la Tradition ancienne? Contrairement à ce que soutient Bossuet, Richard Simon n’est pas, sur les questions trinitaires, un allié des sociniens, mais qu’il tend plutôt à promouvoir une Tradition indifférenciée, sans exclusion.
