Dynamique et trame du peuplement dans la région de Fréjus (Var, France) entre le Vème et le VIIIème siècles de n. è.
Résumé
This paper aims to situate late Roman and early Medieval hilltop settlements within the broader context of the diachronic occupation of the area of Fréjus (South-East France). In spite of the inherent limitations of this method of archaeological recognition, field survey data allow to trace the settlement patterns and dynamics of this area since the Iron Age. Within this evolution, we will specifically analyse the settlement of the 5th-8th c. AD, not only from a quantitative and spatial point of view but also considering the diversity of the settlements forms. Once this micro-regional framework has been established, we will focus our attention on the territory of Roquebrune-sur-Argens to analyse the insertion of the hilltop site of Sainte-Candie within the contemporary settlement system, and its evolution at the Carolingian period.
