My doctoral research was commissioned by a team of French scientists who wished to evaluate the uses of a pedagogical device they had designed : a pedagogical videogame. During the research, two “incidents” perturbed the collection and analysis of the data. The first incident resulted in the falsification of the computer data generated by the users of the device ; the second incident prevented me from accessing the data. The analysis of these incidents represents an opportunity for methodological reflection on the status of these digital data, leading me to consider them as full-fledged actors within the ethnographic inquiry. In fact, these non-human actors participate in the development of ethnographic methods. Applying actor network theory’s “symmetry principle”, I consider digital data as entities that carry and emit significant discourses that are “audible” by the socio-technical network of actors behind the pedagogical device. Digital data, in this article, will be treated as if they were actors that could be interviewed in the course of the ethnographic inquiry. This will give us an opportunity to reconsider the scope and epistemological limits of the qualitative analysis of these objects, in order to reveal the technical and human arrangements that underlie their identification, extraction and intelligibility.
