How do French student teachers deal with literature and its teaching: canon between curriculum and personal preferences
Résumé
Event though the options in elaborating literary corpuses and the educational aims for studying literature are different, pupils and students work on literary objects throughout the European countries.
What does international comparison on the relationship between social practices of literature and the literary canon at school highlight? Is there an implicit European framework for studying literary texts at school? What is currently read and what will be read in European schools, and what for?
This paper is based on a questionnaire developed within the IMEN group (International Mother Tongue Education Network). The investigation, held in half a dozen European countries, intends to gather information about the interests and expectations of future teachers during their initial training: how do they choose literary texts, what are their reading attitudes, which texts do they think pupils must read at school? Significant results will be followed by a critical analysis of the inquiry tool.
