Understanding Access Mobility To Railway Stations

Résumé

Increasing the attractiveness of a railway transport system requires some improvements in station accessibility. In particular, that means promoting environmentally friendly access modes and implementing parking supply management. Understanding how people reach railway stations is a key challenge for authorities to identify the levers for action. Some international scientific works have analyzed access travels to stations according to individuals characteristics, access distances, transport services level including parking supply, and station environment. However, these works are not representative of French behaviors, which are not well known. This work aims to qualify the potential link between access modes to French railway stations, the train service level and the spatial environment of stations. It presents an assessment of the modal shares of access modes to French stations according to their profile. First, it analyzes the different profiles of French regional stations using a specific typology. After having checked the invariance of individuals profile whatever stations, it evaluates the modal practices to reach stations according to the typological profile of them. Different scenarios of mobility policies, especially trend and voluntarist ones based on walking and cycling promotion are considered in the assessment. Finally, this work opens the discussion on the challenges of improving accessibility to stations and on the necessity to work on communication and awareness campaigns adapted both to the stakes of each station and to sustainable mobility practices.
