From hostages to letters of credit. Merchants and moneylenders between Lyon and Savoy
Résumé
By analysing Savoy and Lyon sources, the paper focused on the credit activity of Lyon merchants to the house of Savoy between the early 14th and the early 16th century. Such an investigation outlined significant transformations over time: on the one hand, the group of moneylenders dramatically changed from the late 14th century onwards (from Lyon citizens, to Lombard merchants in Lyon and eventually Florentine companies based in the city); on the other, systems to guarantee and pay debts back also evolved (from the use of hostages, to pawning jewellery, to using merchants bills of exchange)
