A Roman Barge from the Kupa River at Kamensko, Croatia: Evidence of a Regional Shipbuilding Tradition of the Danube River Basin in Southeastern Europe

Abstract

The Kamensko barge is a flat-bottomed fluvial vessel dated between the 1 st century BC and the 3 rd century AD. Its remains lie on the riverbed of the Kupa next to the town of Karlovac in Croatia. Constructed mostly from oak on the principles of bottombased construction, it is 2 m wide and preserved to a length of 12 m. On its last journey it was transporting a cargo of several hundred bricks. Its interesting structural features suggest a kinship with other Roman-era shipwrecks from the Danube hydrographical basin.
