Unsung Women Federal Leaders within the Labour Sport Federation in France, from its Establishment to the Second Post-War Period
Résumé
Examining the French Labour Sport movement in the interwar period, Yannick Deschamps highlights the difficult path women faced in accessing leadership roles. In particular, he explores the politics between rival labour sport federations and how personal relationships played a part in women’s desire to take on leading roles. He also shows how familial concerns created the boundaries around which women had to navigate their involvement in sport. This analysis takes place against the background of the encroaching Second World War, and ultimately the Nazi occupation of France. This event caused a huge disturbance in many labour organizations, including sport. Yannick Deschamps explores the experiences of a group of women during this period, showing how it impacted each of them personally and changed the trajectory of their careers forever.
