Anfore e ceramiche africane dallo scavo delle mura settentrionali di Albintimilium (Ventimiglia, Liguria). Primi dati archeologici e archeometrici
Résumé
The excavations conducted by the IISL in the area of the northern walls of the Roman town of Albintimilium (Ventimiglia, IM, Liguria), in the mark of the tradition of studies, courses and research that began with Nino Lamboglia in 1938-40 in the insulae I and II of the 'Officina del gas', have led to a more precise definition of the northern topography of Albintimilium. This research brought to light the discovery of a large tract of the walls, a posterula, never predicted by the topographic hypotheses so far advanced, and of a minor cardo, as well as stratigraphic sequence dating from the 1st century BC to the later 6th century and the beginning of the 7th century. Of particular interest is the discovery of an extensive cemetery area organized and structured with graves of different types (in amphora, in stone or brick, in cappuccina, in stone sarcophagi). This stretch of the walls, starting from the second half of the 5th century AD, was abandoned and covered by a progressive layer of landslide. Here we present the first data deriving from the archaeological and archaeometric (petrographic) analyses of African containers used for burials, and recovered from the stratigraphy, together with those deriving from the African imports of other ceramic classes.
