About “super-aging”: Idealization, hypomania, renouncement

À propos de « super-vieillissement ». Idéalisation, hypomanie, renoncement

Résumé

The clinical psychology of aging provides a far more contrasting picture of old age than that proposed by proponents of the ideology of super-aging. Two clinical cases, one of a very dynamic centenarian living in an institution and one of a hyperactive woman a little over fifty years old, allow us to discuss the meaning of maintaining performance at all costs during the aging process. While we do not reject the existence of extraordinary human potentialities—which give rise to yearning and widespread fantasy—the requirement of perseverance and the unprecedented, so often projected by the media, raises questions about the psychic functioning of those who appropriate it beyond a certain dose where the reasonable becomes the bearer of momentum. The idealization of performance, the arrogance of exception, the contempt for difference and disability, the denial of loss and lack, an attempt to defend oneself against depressiveness resulting from changes, and a refusal of death emerge as common reasons for this individual identification with super-aging.
