Diplomacy, trade and knowledge: the Mediterranean world and the Indian Ocean in Justinian's time
Justinian, at the beginning of his reign, came into conflict with the Sassanian Persian emperor. He sent ambassadors to the rulers of the Aksumite and Himyarite kingdoms. According to several sources (Procopius, John Malalas, Nonnosos), his plan was to forge alliances with these kings in order to weaken his enemy. Those ambassadors brought back a lot of information on the countries they had visited, which adds to the information collected by Cosmas Indicopleustes. Thanks to these sources, we have valuable information about the situation in the southern Red Sea in the 6th century AD and about the level of knowledge in the Greco-Roman world, which this article aims to assess.
