Covid 19 and remote work in Paris region area (France): how do companies manage workplaces and workspaces?
Abstract
In 2020, due to the covid 19 pandemic, remote work has increased rapidly and massively. This situation raises questions about the long-term effects on work organization and labor relations. The crisis seems to have accelerated the diversification of workplace and workspace, which had been observed over the recent decades. This paper analyzes the link between remote work and diversification of workplaces in compagnies strategies. It is based on an ongoing research focused on companies in Ile-de-France (Paris region area). In Paris region area, 88% of jobs are in the tertiary sector (vs. 80% at the national level) (year 2020). This paper aims to understand how companies adjust their real estate strategy (location, size, layout of workspaces). Do they integrate a more extensive management of workplaces (« satellite » or shared office, support of third place, compension for work from home)?
This research is based on a mixed method (questionnaire-based survey and semi-structured interview) conducted among companies in the Paris region area. It intends to provide a better understanding of the different ways in which companies adapt and manage workspaces (different strategies, trade-offs, constraints and implementation).
