Texts on Artifacts. How to improve Epigraphic Publication in a Digital Ecosystem
Textes et Artefacts : comment faire progresser la publication épigraphique dans l'écosystème numérique
Résumé
In the context of a growing scholarly interest in the materiality of inscriptions and their spatial recontextualization, this contribution aims to demonstrate that the new digital ecosystem of publication offers a tangible opportunity for a thorough epistemological overhaul, allowing to reunite all components of inscriptions for a full and accurate analysis of the semantics of those “textual works of art” designed for exhibition. A study of a funerary slab from Alexandria kept in the Louvre (Ma 4203, 3rd century BCE) results in a new edition of the epigraphical text and a renewed interpretation of the connections between the representation and the inscription, and illustrates the rationale and benefits of such a holistic approach. This approach can easily be transposed in an encoding strategy conforming to the EpiDoc/TEI/xml schema enriched with additional TEI elements.
