Résumé

The main claim to fame of the monument known as the “Libyco-Punic Mausoleum of Dougga” or the “Mausoleum of Atban” is that it was the site of the bilingual inscription that enabled Ferdinand de Saulcy to decipher the easternmost variant of the Libyco-berber alphabet in 1843. But it was also the cause of many tribulations for it. The building that can be admired today was almost completely destroyed in 1842 by the English consul Thomas Reade, who wanted to appropriate the inscription. The archaeologist Louis Poinssot restored it in three campaigns from 1908 to 1910, and there is reason to believe that its present form is roughly the same as it was before its destruction. But he did not know where the inscription was affixed before it was taken away, and was also uncertain about the conformation of the inner chambers of the monument. Documents unearthed in 1959 by his son Claude partially cleared up their uncertainties, but other documents, of which the Poinssot father and son knew only poor versions, would have been of even greater help. The history of this restoration will be retraced here, focusing on these documents which, if the restorer had known about them, would perhaps have given a different course to his work; we will also briefly mention the celebration of which the restored monument is now the subject in Tunisia.
