Alpine Connections: Iron Age Mobility in the Po Valley and the Circum-Alpine Regions

Résumé

The present study mainly addresses the relationships between the Golasecca culture’s core area and the neighbouring regions in the western Alps and the western and central Po Valley during the Early Iron Age, between the 7th and the 5th cen- turies BC (Golasecca period IC to IIIA1, corresponding to Hallstatt C2–D3 in Central Europe). Our dataset includes a comprehensive distribution of Golasecca- type objects north of the Alps (Cicolani 2017), as well as the current datasets from Liguria interna (Cicolani 2021) and western Emilia (Zamboni 2018). In this chapter, we critically review the archaeological background of north- west Italy and previous interpretations of material remains, especially metal ornaments, as evidence of individual and group mobility. We then suggest the application of quantitative, contextual, spatial, and technological analyses, with the aim of approaching material agency and social complexity within the region and period under investigation.
