Aristotle’s “Phantastic” Double Gaze. “Mnemonic Gaze” and “Pictorial Gaze” in e Anima III, 3.
Du double regard « phantastique » d’Aristote
Résumé
In De Anima III, 3, 427b17-24, Aristotle intends to show that phantasia differs from doxa in that the latter is “free” of any relation to truth, unlike the former. To do this, he relies on the staging of two gazes: the “mnemonic gaze” and the “pictorial gaze”, since neither of them has any “necessary” relationship to truth. However, there is no discussion of aesthetics in this passage.
