Examples of extraction of ancient shipwrecks in France, Italy and Croatia

Résumé

The paper will present some examples of the methods used for the extraction of ancient wrecks discovered during preventive archaeology work in silted-up harbors. The excavation, study and extraction of these wrecks were carried out in a wet context, the excavation trench being constantly emptied of its underground water thanks to the use of more or less complex pumping systems. The first example is that of the two Greco-archaic shipwrecks Jules-Verne 9 and 7 discovered in 1993 in Marseille, Place Jules-Verne. These wrecks were excavated by a team from the CNRS-Centre Camille Jullian directed by Patrice Pomey and, because of their scientific interest, they were recovered and then preserved by the ARC-Nucléart restoration workshop. They are currently on display at the Musée d'Histoire de Marseille. The second example concerns the Roman wrecks in the ancient port of Naples, Piazza Municipio. In 2004, the two best preserved wrecks, Napoli A and C, were recovered in one piece using a specially constructed fiberglass hull to support the old wooden structures. This fiberglass shell will be used during the conservation process by immersion in a PEG mixture. The other Roman wrecks were dismantled and recovered in pieces in 2004 (Napoli B), 2009 (Napoli E) and 2015 (Napoli F, G and H). Most of these wrecks are still preserved in fresh water awaiting the conservation process, only the Napoli E is being treated by the Istituto Centrale per il Restauro (ISCR) in Rome. Finally, the third example comes from the ancient port of Pula in Croatia where two Roman sewn shipwrecks were discovered and excavated in 2013. Pula 1 was extracted using a metal frame, while Pula 2 was extracted in pieces. The latter has been conserved by ARC-Nucléart, and conservation treatment of the latter is underway.
