Les sources françaises du plain-chant et de la Sainte Élisabeth de Liszt: D' Ortigue, Montalembert, Raillard, Lambillotte et quelques autres

Résumé

French literature and religious studies, as well as French theologians, played an important role in Liszt’s life and career. They were also a key element in his oeuvre and cosmopolitan identity. This article studies some French aspects of his religious music: the idea of regeneration, typical of the French society after the Revolution and during the first decades of the 19th century; the restoration of plainchant, a usual topic after the work of the “Comité historique des Arts et Monuments” and individual initiatives (d’Ortigue, Raillard, Lambillotte, Clément, etc.); the appropriation in his composition of faux-bourdon, a representative technique characteristic of French churches for the harmonization of chant (Liszt used it from the 1830s to the end of his life, in secular as well as religious works (De profundis. Psaume instrumental for orchestra and piano, Pensée des morts for piano, Stabat Mater speciosa and De profundis for choir, etc.). This article also studies how Liszt embraced the history and theory of plainchant (especially his interest in modal theory) through reading and annotating books and treatises on this topic. Finally, his first Oratorio Die Legende von der Heiligen Elisabeth is presented as a case study of his attempt to document his composition with researching “authentic” liturgical melodies from the texts published by Montalembert in his Vie de Sainte Elisabeth de Hongrie (1836). This biography appears to be one of the oratorio’s sources that influenced the German libretto written by Otto Roquette
