Introducing the discovery of the earliest manuscript of the original long version of the Liber Nemroth. The volume was dismembered in the 14th century. Its fragments have been used as a register cover since the 15th century. A detailed palaeographic expertise establishes that this manuscript, today in Strasbourg, is from the third quarter of the ninth century and was copied in Verona, probably in the last period of the scriptorium of Pacificus, author of the poem “Spera celi” about the construction of a ‘horologium nocturnum’. The article gives an updated list of the witnesses of the LN and of the chapters they preserve, and a description of the contents of the manuscript S, which support the choices made for the critical edition (in progress) of the text and of the diagrams, and allow to place this witness in the tradition of the text. The history of the archives of the Order of “Hospitaliers” where the manuscript is found completes the investigation; it gives hypotheses on the history of the manuscript, and suggest a passage by Saint-Vincent in Metz. The appendix give the details of the remaining fragments (fragments of cc. 3-17; cc. 24-27; cc. 36-37).
