Social networks as popular learning and emancipating spaces: the case of the Yellow Vests' movement in France

Résumé

In this endeavor, we aim to explore the potential of social networks as a platform for learning, facilitating interactions between peers and self-taught individuals, enabling their access to the public sphere, and fostering political engagement within a socially diverse and popular social movement. Our analysis draws heavily upon Nancy Fraser's theory of alternative discursive spaces and counterpublics as a framework to examine our subject matter. Specifically, we examine the Gilets Jaunes movement, which unfolded in France from 2018 to 2019, as it offers valuable insights and serves as a heuristic case study in this context.
