Sasanian epigraphic texts in their contexts

Résumé

In both the Achaemenid (550-330 BCE) and Sasanian (224-651) periods, monumental rock inscriptions were a means of visual and ritual colonisation of the topography of empire. Although philologists have examined the linguistic aspects of these texts, and historians have focused on the events they chronicle, a cross-disciplinary approach that admits a study of the performative significance of engraving an inscription on a tomb, a mountain, above a spring or underneath an older inscription is long overdue. Beyond their semantic message, Sasanian inscriptions engraved on older Achaemenid monuments enabled the new dynasty to establish continuity with the previous rulers of Fārs and appropriate for themselves the ancient ritual significance of sites such as Naqsh-e Rostam (Canepa 2010). Through a close study of key Middle Persian Sasanian inscriptions in their context and basing myself on the works of philosopher of language J. L. Austin and anthropologist of writing B. Fraenkel I will show that the inscriptions systematically reference and engage with their support, their geographical surroundings (natural and built) and, most importantly, the other inscriptions directly contiguous to them, inserting themselves literally in the landscape. This approach, standing at the crossroads of linguistic philosophy, anthropology and epigraphy provides us with a broader framework within which to consider the meta-linguistic aspects of ancient Iranian inscriptions and to better understand the use of monumental writing in ancient Iran.
